Is San Diego St. the best team out west?

Will San Diego St win another MWC Crown?
San Diego dismantled another WCC powerhouse last night, the same team that beat the Aztecs down on national TV a year ago.  However, San Diego St. brought almost everyone back, and with the addition of Santa Clara transfer James Rahon the Aztecs look keen to make another NCAA run.

Last night in San Diego St.'s 69-55 win over Saint Mary's (CA) Malcom Thomas, a senior transfer from San Diego City College, was a beast in the middle swatting away 6 Gael shots. D.J. Gay blanketed the Gaels senior point guard Micky McConnell, holding him to two points. McConnell led the NCAA in three point shooting last season.

The Aztecs are playing defense which is a scary thought because offensive fire power has never been the issue. Last night they had only two players in double digits, and eight players scored five or more points. Sophomore Kawhi Leonard has come into his own, averaging a double-double scoring 16.1 points per game while collecting 10.1 boards.

The only problem that could get in the Aztecs way is their soft schedule. If San Diego St. were to stumble in a couple games before the conference schedule gets underway, it could do some serious damage. Wichita St will be a good test for the Aztecs this Saturday, as will a decent California Golden Bears team this next thursday, but after that the schedule is full of cupcakes. Steve Fisher better make sure he has his boys ready if the Aztecs want to be dancing again.
